Project Description

Custom Die-Cut Adhesive Masks for RealD 3D Glasses

Project Brief

RealD wanted to have an easy way to customize their 3D glasses for various films. Custom coloring and manufacturing plastic glasses for each film is costly and once a film was done in theaters they had no choice but to recycle the remaining inventory. They wanted a way to customize their existing stock of their standard glasses for each film that was more economical, with shorter turn-times and save money on their marketing budget.

The Solution

CVG designed paper masks that adhere to RealD’s existing 3D glasses via glue dots (see image on the left). This allowed for greater efficiencies in their marketing budgets and much faster turn-times. Also depending on each film they could choose to do multiple variations as seen above in the award winning designs for The Lego Movie and Disney’s Monster University.

Below are BEFORE & AFTER images that show the workings of the die-lines in these projects. In the BEFORE image the magenta line shows the custom developed die-line that will create the “punch outs” for the masks. The AFTER images show the punched out masks.
